Sense of Space - Initial script and sound plan - with James Mellors

this was our initial script and sound plan....


Sense of Space
Script & Sound Plan

1)     Sound of boiling water in a pot fade in along with sound of clatter & placement of plates & cutlery. Volume is raised to medium standard level.
2)     Head Chef – “Ok chef’s more orders are coming through its starting to get busy, let’s try and keep up the pace, ok?”
Chefs – “Yes Chef”
3)     Sound of knife being sharpened fades in, layered over boiling water sound, volume is medium standard level.
4)     Sound of preparing of food fades in:
Peeling of potato
Peeling of carrot
Chopping of potato
Chopping of carrot
Chopping onion
                    These preparing sounds will layer over each other one by one to create a steady rhythm & beat. The volume will be to medium standard, the sounds of the knife being sharpened & boiling water are still playing in the background during the preparing of the food (there sound is lowered slightly more attention is on the preparing of food).
5)     Head Chef – “Hello waiter, meals for table 4 & 16 are ready for collection”.
6)     Sound of sharpened knife & preparation of the food stop, bubbling boiling water is still playing.
7)     Sound of scraping prepared food into the boiling water fade in, volume is still medium standard level.
8)     Sound of sizzles of food being cooked fade in, medium standard volume.
9)     Sound of running taps and pots being cleaned with a metal scrubber fade in, medium standard level, layered over along with the sound of sizzling.
10)  Sound of door swinging open fades in followed by footsteps. (marks the entrance of the waiter into kitchen)

Waiter – “tables 7 and 8 are still waiting on desserts”
Head Chef – “What? Chef what’s happened to the desserts for tables 7 and 8?”
Chef – “Doing them now chef”
Head Chef – “They should have been done 10 minutes ago, let’s not fall back, come on, come on, come on! … Tell them they will be arriving shortly”
Waiter – “Ok, I’ll take this food out first”

Sound of scraping plates being picked up followed by footsteps and a swinging door indicate the waiter leaving the kitchen.

(Sound volume are raised at this point to indicate the work becoming more stressful)
11)  Head Chef – “We need to pick up the pace, let’s go! Let’s go! Let’s go!”
12)  Volumes are raised and sounds are overlapped, repeated over, faded in together creating a rhythm and beat:
Peeling of vegetables
Chopping of food
Sizzling of food
Knife being sharpened
Boiling water

13)  Sound of clattering plates & cutlery entering and leaving dishwasher fades in. Joins the repetitive and overlapping sounds.
14)  Head Chef – “Chef where’s that dish for table 27”.
Chef – “It’s here chef”
15)  Sound of footsteps and then a pot falling and smashing onto the floor.
16)  Chef – “Oh shit!”
Head Chef – “For God’s sake! Make another one now! Quick! … Don’t just stand there like now! Now! Now!”
Chef – “I’m doing it!”
Head Chef – “Then don’t just stand there and get it done! … Understand!”
Chef – “Yes chef!”
                  (Sounds are raised again to higher volume to show chef becoming more irate)
17)  Sound of baking tray scraping on counter and being picked up followed by the sound of the oven door opening, the baking tray being placed inside the oven and then the oven door closing.
18)  Sound of whisking sauces fades in.
19)  Sounds of running taps, pots being washed, clattering of plates & whisking of sauces fades in and joins the rhythm and beat of the other sounds.
20)  Sound of door swings open followed by footsteps to show waiter entering the kitchen.
21)  Waiter – “Erm, chef?”
Head Chef – “Yes! What now? What it is!”
Waiter – “Its table 16 there not happy with their meals”
Head Chef – “What! Argh your joking aren’t you!?”
Waiter – “She said her steak is too well done when she asked for medium”
Head Chef – “Fuck sake! It said on the order slip well done!”
Waiter – “and also the man said his meal is too cold to eat”
Head Chef – “Chef, why are you not double checking the food before it goes out! And where the hell are those desserts!”
Chef – “There ready now!”

22)  The sound of another plate falling and shattering.
23)  Chef – “Oops”
24)  Volume of all sounds are raised again and repeated to show chef’s boiling point.

Peeling of vegetables
Chopping of food
Sizzling of food
Knife being sharpened
Boiling water
Clattering plates & cutlery
Whisking of sauces
Oven door opening & closing
Plate shattering

25)  Head Chef – “AAAAAHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!”
Repetition of other sounds stop before head chef stop screaming so it is silent and all you hear is the head chef screaming.

26)  Head Chef – “I’m done! I’ve fucking had enough of this bullshit!”
Sound of pots being thrown around by head chef as he speaks this sentence followed by the sound of the door being opened and closed to represent the head chef leaving the kitchen.

27)  Waiter – “Is he coming back?”
Chef – “I don’t know”
