Skin Deep- Yousaf Ali Khan- 2001
Skin Deep is a short drama directed by Yousaf Ali Khan. It's about the racism struggles in the 1980's with the national front, but also the personal struggles that the main character, Romo, has with his own heritage. This film strikingly reminds me of Shane Meadows' 'This Is England' but obviously from a different viewpoint, Romo's. He feels the ever increasing need to be accepted into British society and therefore suppresses and runs from his own roots, doing everything he can to fit in. we see throughout the film that he eventually can't escape who he is and it all becomes too much for him and he crumbles under the pressure. The camera shots are close up when Romo talks to himself in the mirror, when he talks about being of different race. the mirror is very poignant in the film because in the beginning of the film, in the morning, Romo is sure of himself and confident, and then in the evening, he loses all self assurance and realises he can't run from who he is. we learn all this from when he is looking in the mirror and i really like that approach the director has used. I really like this film as a whole because it tackles such a sensitive subject which is still a major taboo subject today and i like how it's very specific to that time and authentic, with references to the national front throughout the film.
